The John Barry Award for New Fiction in Spanish  was inaugurated in September 2004, on the first anniversary of Professor Barry's untimely death, in order to continue his objectives of recognizing excellence in the work of established Chicago authors writing in Spanish, and to encourage the activities of new 21st-century writers in the significantly Latin-Americanized city of Chicago.  For the first five years this prize was limited to contestants writing in the Chicago area; in 2008 it has been expanded to allow contestants writing in Spanish throughout the United States and Canada.  The award carries a cash prize of $1000 for the best story, as chosen by a panel of judges from Chicago-based universities, editorial boards, and other organizations.  In 2008 the Award, as well as travel expenses for the winner to attend the award ceremony in Chicago, are co-sponsored by Roosevelt University,  Contratiempo, National-Louis University, the University of Chicago College of the Humanities, el Instituto Cervantes, and the John Barry Award Foundation.
